AFC West Teams

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos play in the National Football League in the West Division of the American Football Conference. The team plays their home games in Denver, CO at Empower Field at Mile High. The team has been around since 1960 when it was founded as a charter member of the American Football League.

The Broncos joined the NFL in 1970 as part of a merger between the AFL and the NFL. At the time, the team actually does not have an owner, which is somewhat rare in the NFL. The Broncos had their first winning season back in 1973, made it to the playoffs in 1977 and even competed in Super Bowl XII that year.

The team has been one of the most successful teams in the National Football League since their 1975 season. The Broncos have won eight AFC Championships, in 1977, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1997, 1998, 2013, and 2015. The team has also won three Super Bowl championships, in 1997, 1998, and 2015.

Kansas City Chiefs

The history surrounding the Kansas City Chiefs runs deep when it comes to professional football. This franchise dates back to 1960 when the team was known as the Dallas Texans. As a founding member of the American Football League (AFL), the move to Kansas City took place in 1963.

From a trivia standpoint, it is important to note that Kansas City played the Green Bay Packers in the first Super Bowl. This game preceded the formal merger between the AFL and the NFL and it was simply billed as a championship game. Green Bay went on to win 35-10.

There were more than a few dry spells for Kansas City when it came to postseason play. The Chiefs did go to the AFC Championship in 1993 with Marty Schottenheimer as head coach. Yet, most of the team’s postseason appearances ended with a quick exit from the playoffs.

Kansas City named Andy Reid as the Chiefs’ head coach in 2013. Under his guidance, they won their second Super Bowl title in 2019. A year later, Kansas City came up short against Tampa Bay in Super Bowl LV.

Las Vegas Raiders

As one of the most popular NFL franchises with both fans and bettors, the Raiders are also one of the more travelled teams in the league. Their origins date back to 1960 and the city of Oakland as a member of the old American Football League.

The AFL merged with the NFL in 1970 and the Raiders became a fixture in the league’s AFC West Division. The year before, team owner Al Davis hired John Madden as his head coach and the rest was history.

Prior to Madden taking over the helm, the Raiders did make a run to the AFL/NFL Championship Game in 1967 which is now referred to as Super Bowl II. Oakland came up short in a 33-14 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

After spending 13 seasons in LA, the Raiders moved back to Oakland before taking up permanent residence in Las Vegas in 2020.

Los Angeles Chargers

Despite a recent name and location change, the Chargers were actually founded in 1959, playing their first professional season as a member of the American Football League in 1960. Their first season was actually playing for Los Angeles, however the team relocated the next year, 1961, to San Diego and they became the San Diego Chargers.

The Chargers played in San Diego for a total of fifty six seasons. But, in 2017, the team relocated back to Los Angeles and became the Los Angeles Chargers once again. This was coincidentally just a year after the Rams relocated back to Los Angeles as well after playing in St. Louis.

The Chargers have a fairly strong record, having won the AFL championship back in 1963. The team had been able to reach the AFL Championship game a total of four times. After joining the NFL, the franchise has reached the playoffs thirteen times and the AFL Championship game a total of four.

The Chargers won their first and only AFC Championship in 1994 before moving to Super Bowl XXIX where they lost to the San Francisco 49ers. The team has had notable players and coaches, with eight players and one coach inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
