Betting on the Central Michigan Chippewas
The Central Michigan Chippewas are one of the most solid Group of Five programs in college football recently. Power 5 programs Michigan and Michigan State are the main draws. However, legally betting on the MAC’s Central Michigan is another nice option in the state.
Overall, Central Michigan is 293-240-11 with seven conference titles. Historically, the Chippewas are 30th all-time in Division I winning percentage.
Central Michigan most recently posted a 9-4 record with a victory vs. Washington State in the Sun Bowl. Jim McElwain is the current coach for Central Michigan.
Central Michigan plays at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, the largest on-campus venue in the conference.
Central Michigan transitioned from Division II to Division I when they joined the Mid-Atlantic Conference in 1975. The Chippewas didn’t register a losing season in MAC play until 1987.
Herb Deromedi coached Central Michigan from 1978-93 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Deromedi guided Central Michigan to three MAC titles (1979, 1980, 1990) and was a two-time MAC Coach of the Year.
Back-to-back victories over Michigan State in 1991 and 1992 served as a major source of program pride. The 1991 victory was especially stunning. Oddsmakers didn’t release point spreads because of how massive they expected the win to be for Michigan State. Instead, the Chippewas never trailed and earned the 20-3 upset. Central Michigan followed up the next season with a 24-20 victory vs. the Spartans
Central Michigan defeated Middle Tennessee State 31-14 in 2006 for its first-ever bowl win. The Chippewas are 4-9 overall in bowls. Central Michigan has also defeated Troy, Western Kentucky, and Washington State in bowl play.
In 2009, Central Michigan had a magical season under Butch Jones. The Chippewas were 12-2 and finished ranked No. 23 in the AP poll.
Central Michigan has several noteworthy players in their history. Wide receiver Antonio Brown is a six-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion. Offensive tackle Eric Fisher was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.
The main rival for Central Michigan is in-state foe Western Michigan. The Chippewas earned the Victory Cannon last season. A good way to bet on this rivalry would be to use the total for combined points scored. This means that if the betting line is 60 points, Central Michigan and Western Michigan would have to score a combined 61 points for the OVER to yield a successful bet.
