Betting on the Western Michigan Broncos

The Western Michigan Broncos have grown to become one of the more popular football programs in the Mid-American Conference. Commonly referred to as the MAC, betting on the Broncos during football season has become a staple. This popularity expands all across the Midwest region in states with legal betting on college sports.

The first season of football at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo was played in 1962. As proud members of the MAC, this is one of the few college teams to spend its entire tenure of play in the same conference.

That level of consistency has led to a strong record of success over the years. This has been especially the case in recent campaigns with numerous trips to a postseason bowl game. The Broncos’ first appearance in a bowl game was in 1988 with  Al Molde as the team’s head coach. The end result was a 35-30 loss to Fresno State in the California Bowl.

Western Michigan’s first postseason victory came in 2015. Head coach PJ Fleck led the team to an 8-5 mark including a 45-31 win over Middle Tennessee State in the Bahamas Bowl.

The following season with Fleck still at the helm was the best season on record for Western Michigan’s football program. Behind a 13-1 record, the Broncos ranked as high as No. 12 in the national polls. They went on to finish No. 15 in the nation in the Associated Press Top 25.

Playing on a national stage in the 2017 Cotton Bowl, Western Michigan came up just short in a 24-16 loss to Big Ten power Wisconsin.

The Broncos have been an anchor in the MAC’s West Division for the past six decades. Natural rivalries have formed against teams such as Northern Illinois, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan. Getting the chance to face all three of those teams each season makes them all marquee matchups.

Betting on Western Michigan football in season is big all across the state. If the Broncos happen to be listed as seven-point home favorites against Eastern Michigan, they would have to beat the Eagles by eight points or more to cover the spread and win that bet.

Legal retail sports betting in Michigan casinos was first launched in March of 2020. The process to offer legal online betting was finally completed in January of 2021. Since that time, this popular Midwest betting market continues to post some impressive monthly betting handles.

The final version of the bill legalizing Michigan sports betting did include in-state college sports. This means that in-state Western Michigan football fans can legally bet on the team’s games during the season
