Betting on the Kentucky Wildcats

The University of Kentucky has a long and illustrious history for excellence in college sports. As members of the SEC, the Kentucky Wildcats’ football team has always had a strong base of avid fans. More recently, legal sports betting on the team’s football games has attracted more interest.

Kentucky Wildcats Team Overview

Football at the University of Kentucky started in 1915 with the inaugural team going 6-1-1 that season. After playing their first six seasons as Independents, the Wildcats were one of 14 teams in the Southern Conference.

This was one of the first college football conferences based on geographic location. At that time, other football programs in the Southern Conference included Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Mississippi State and Tennessee.

Including Kentucky, all six of these schools would go on to become charter members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 1933 where they continue to reside for all their college athletic programs.

Before legendary head coach Bear Bryant enjoyed his greatest success at Alabama, he coached Kentucky from 1946 to 1953. The Wildcats were ranked No. 7 in the final 1959 national rankings after winning that season’s Sugar Bowl.

One of Kentucky’s best football seasons in team history was in 1977. With Fran Curci as head coach, the Wildcats went 9-3 and finished the year on a high note by winning the Peach Bowl. This was Kentucky’s highest final national ranking ever at No. 6.

More recently, the Wildcats reached No. 8 in the national polls in the 2007 season with Rich Brooks leading the team as head coach. Mark Stoops was named head coach of Kentucky in 2013. Coming off a solid 10-3 record in 2021, the Wildcats won the Citrus Bowl and finished No. 18 in the final Associated Press Top 25.

Kentucky has developed a number of great rivalries with such a long tenure in the SEC. You could probably put Tennessee at the top of that list since both teams play in the East Division. As members of the ACC, the Louisville Cardinals are natural in-state rivals in any athletic competition.

Betting on Kentucky as a road underdog is popular against the SEC’s best teams. If the Wildcats were listed as 14-point underdogs against Alabama, they would win that bet with a straight-up victory or a loss by 13 points or less.

Betting on the Kentucky Wildcats in Kentucky

Everyone knows that Kentucky is big on legal horse race betting. This industry has helped to raise interest in legal sports betting as well. State House members have supported the necessary legislation to change the current laws. However, the issue continues to be heavily debated in the state Senate. Eventually, Kentucky should add legal sports betting to the gaming mix. Until then, Wildcats’ football fans can bet on their favorite team’s games in states with legal sportsbooks. Betting on sports online in Kentucky is illegal at this time.
