Betting on the Marshall Thundering Herd
Marshall University is steeped in the history of West Virginia football. The team’s unique name as the Thundering Herd pretty much says it all. Betting on Marshall during football season has also become popular throughout the Mountain State in recent years.
The football program at Marshall University played its inaugural season in 1962 as a member of the Mid-American Conference. The team also played as an Independent and in the Southern Conference through the 1981 season.
The rebirth of football at Marshall following an extended hiatus from play was in 1997. Rejoining the MAC, the Thundering Herd went 10-3 that season to earn a trip to the Motor City Bowl. Head coach Bob Pruett led the team to postseason bowl games in seven of his eight seasons in that position.
More recently, Doc Holliday’s run as head coach from 2010 to 2020 included eight postseason appearances. Marshall was nationally ranked at No. 23 in the final Associated Press Top 25 in 2014. In his final season as head coach, the Thundering Herd reached No. 15 in the 2020 national rankings.
Marshall joined Conference USA in 2005 and remains in that popular Mid-Major at the present time. Playing against teams from a wide cross section of the country has created some lasting rivalries. Behind a consistent program, Marshall has become one of the premier football teams in C-USA.
Playing in the East Division, annual showdowns against Florida Atlantic and Florida International garner some added betting attention. Rivalries against UAB and North Texas also rank high as a pair of teams from the West Division of C-USA.
Betting on the Thundering Herd draws added attention for the UNDER on the total line. Marshall has become known as an excellent defensive team in recent years. If the total for a game against UAB was set at 48 points, these two teams would have to score fewer than that total combined to win an UNDER bet.
Betting in West Virginia
