Betting on the Minnesota Golden Gophers
Since Head Coach P.J. Fleck’s arrival in Minnesota, the Golden Gophers’ program has been reinvigorated.
While Minnesota isn’t one of the Big Ten’s traditional powerhouses, it has made enough noise in the past several seasons to compete with the big boys.
Minnesota Golden Gophers Overview
The Golden Gophers’ football program pre-dates the 20th century, making it one of the oldest programs in the nation. From the mid-1930s to the early-1960s, Minnesota was somewhat of a force to be reckoned with.
From ’34-’41, the team claimed five national championships and finished the season undefeated four times. 1960 and 1961 saw the Golden Gophers make two consecutive Rose Bowl appearances.
Since those glory days, it’s been tough sledding for Minnesota, as it’s made scattered appearances in the AP Poll and competed in second-tier bowl games.
The early 2000s were a treat for the Gophers as they racked up five straight bowl game appearances, including three consecutive victories from 2002-2004.
In 2017, the team hired P.J. Fleck, who famously led Western Michigan to the Cotton Bowl in 2016. Fleck’s infectious energy brought excitement back to Minneapolis, but the team struggled in his first two seasons.
In 2019, Fleck and quarterback Tanner Morgan helped the Golden Gophers win more Big Ten games (seven) than any other team in school history. It capped off the season with a victory in the Outback Back and ranked 10th in the year’s final AP Poll.
Betting on the Golden Gophers in Minnesota
Currently, sports betting is illegal in Minnesota. With that being said, the state carried great momentum into 2022 as the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association got on board with the mobile sports betting train.
The Minnesota Indian Gaming Association previously opposed legal sports betting in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but it is now working with the state legislature in an effort to legalize it.
The 2022 legislative session includes two sports betting bills, one from the House and one from the Senate. The House bill, which some people believe has a greater chance to pass through the state legislature, would include up to 11 online betting licenses through the tribes.
The Senate bill also includes online betting.
It appears legal sports betting will be coming to Minnesota in the near future. When it does arrive, bettors can expect something like this:
- Minnesota Golden Gophers +5.5
- Wisconsin Badgers -5.5
Here, the Golden Gophers are 5.5-point underdogs against their Big Ten rival the Wisconsin Badgers. Minnesota bettors need the Golden Gophers to defeat Wisconsin or lose fewer than 6 points.
If Wisconsin beats Minnesota by 6 or more, Wisconsin covers the spread, and Minnesota spread bettors lose their wagers.
