Betting on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Wake Forest has carved out its own tradition for college football as long-standing members of the ACC. The Demon Deacons have a solid base of fans that extends past the team’s North Carolina borders. Sports bettors in legal US markets also take an added interest in the team during college football season.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons Team Overview

Wake Forest University is located in Winston-Salem as one of the more prominent football programs in North Carolina. The team started play in 1908 and played as an Independent until 1935.

As an offshoot of the old Southern Conference, Wake Forest became a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 1953. Other original ACC teams in the state included the Duke Blue Devils, North Carolina Tar Heels and the North Carolina State Wolfpack.

The early years in the new conference were rather lean for the Demon Deacons against tough competition. However, the 1979 season marked a turning point for the program. Head coach John Mackovic led Wake Forest to the Tangerine Bowl that season behind a record of 8-4.

Wake Forest returned to postseason play in 1992 behind Bill Dooley as head coach. His team went 8-4 to earn an invitation to the Independence Bowl. The Demon Deacons won that game 39-35 over the Oregon Ducks to finish the season ranked No. 25 in the final Associated Press Top 25.

Since 2002, Wake Forest has qualified for a postseason bowl in 11 different seasons. The highlight of this run was an appearance in the 2007 Orange Bowl with head coach Jim Grobe leading the team. Wake Forest went 11-3 that season as the No. 18 team in the nation.

Coming off an 11-3 mark in 2021, the Demon Deacons were No. 15 in the final AP Top 25. They beat the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the Gator Bowl with Dave Clawson as head coach.

Strong rivalries exist against all the other North Carolina teams in the ACC. Betting on Wake Forest as home favorites in these matchups has become a popular wager at legal sportsbooks

Suppose the Demon Deacons were favored by four points at home on the point spread against NC State. They would have to beat the Wolfpack by five points or more to win that bet at a legal sportsbook.
