Betting on the UCLA Bruins
UCLA football might not be considered a blue blood in the same way that it is in basketball, but it’s had its fair share of success. Being in Los Angeles will always keep a little spotlight on the Bruins.
UCLA Bruins Overview
UCLA’s football program dates back to 1928, and its early history included the one-and-only Jackie Robinson’s brief football career from 1939-1941.
In 1954, UCLA went undefeated at 9-0 and claimed its only national championship. The Bruins carried the momentum of the ‘50s into the next two decades, where they routinely began the season ranked in the AP top-25.
The Bruins greatest years, though, may have come in the late-‘80s with Troy Aikman at quarterback.
Aikman, an NFL Hall of Famer and three-time Super Bowl champion, marched the Bruins to a 20-4 record over two seasons. Aikman’s Bruins also won the Aloha Bowl in ’87 and the Cotton Bowl in ’88.
Other greats like Maurice Jones-Drew and Jonathan Ogden played their college football at UCLA since Aikman’s time, but none have quite matched the success.
Betting on the UCLA Bruins in California
Sorry Bruins fans, but sports betting is illegal in California and will not be operational until 2023 at the earliest.
There is already an approved ballot measure for retail sports betting, which is backed by the state’s tribal operators. Cardrooms and groups with interests in offering commercial, online sports betting in California are lobbying against that measure.
Those groups prefer online sports betting to retail and are suggesting that sports betting is offered through more than just tribal operators.
Online betting proponents also got their initiative added to the November ballot, but it likely wouldn’t launch right away.
Many states that have jumped into online sports betting take time to do their due diligence with regards to regulation, responsible gaming initiatives, and safety and security measures.
Fan and bettors awaiting legalization in California can expect to see options like this when it does become legal:
- UCLA Bruins -3
- USC Trojans +3
In this example, the UCLA Bruins are favored by 3 points over their bitter rival, the USC Trojans. A bettor laying the 3 points with UCLA would need the Bruins to win by more than 3 to cover the spread.
If the Bruins win by fewer than 3 points, USC covers the spread, and the bettor’s wager settles as a loss. If UCLA wins by exactly 3 points, the bettor is refunded, but they would make no profit.
