Betting on the Virginia Tech Hokies
The football program at Virginia Tech has a long and storied tradition of success over the years. As members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), the Hokies have developed a strong national following with fans and sports bettors alike.
Based in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech has been the state’s most popular football team since 1902. The Hokies played as Independents in the early years until joining the Southern Conference in 1921.
Along with schools such as Alabama, Georgia, Clemson and North Carolina, the Southern Conference formed the basis for both the ACC and the Southeast Conference (SEC). Virginia Tech remained a member until 1965 when the school decided to go back to playing football as an Independent. The road to the ACC included a stop in the Big East from 1991 to 2003.
The Hokies’ football program enjoyed various degrees of success over the years. However, when Frank Beamer took over as head coach in 1987, he brought some much needed continuity to the team.
Virginia Tech was nationally ranked in 16 seasons from 1984 through the 2014 season. In 1999 while still members of the Big East, the Hokies finished the year as the No. 2 team in the Associated Press final Top 25.
Beamer was able to lead his team to a postseason bowl every season starting in 1993 until he called it a career after the 2015 season. Justin Fuente stepped up to fill those big shoes as the new head coach. He has been able to continue the legacy of success at Virginia Tech.
Playing in the ACC, natural rivalries have carried over from the Big East against Miami and Pittsburgh. The annual showdown against in-state Virginia has become a major betting event in the state.
If the Hokies happened to be favored by seven points at home against the Cavaliers, they would have to win that game by eight or more points to also win a bet on the point spread at a Virginia mobile sportsbook.
