Betting on the UAB Blazers

UAB football is alive and well, and the Blazers have established themselves as one of Conference USA’s best teams in the last half decade.

UAB Blazers Overview

UAB’s football program began in the early 1990s in Division III, but it quickly made the jump to the FBS in 1996. For nearly 20 years, the team struggled mightily and finished the season with a winning record just twice.

After two tough seasons (2012-2013) with Garrick McGee leading the charge, Bill Clark took over as head coach.

In 2014, the Blazers won six games, making them bowl eligible for the first time since 2004. Shockingly, a day after the team won its sixth game, Sports Illustrated reported that the school was planning to fire its athletic director and dissolve the football program.

The announcement was met with outrage from fans and players, and public opinion essentially forced the school to reinstate the program, effective in 2017.

Since its reinstatement, the program has claimed its first two conference championships in school history.

Betting on UAB in Alabama

Sports betting is currently illegal in Alabama, but the state made progress toward legalization in 2021. While betting still has a long way to go before it ever launches, it appears Alabama will eventually bring recreational betting to its residents.

The aforementioned progress made in 2021 came in the form of a comprehensive proposal that would have brought a lottery system and legal sports betting to Alabama.

Some states choose to regulate legal betting through a state lottery system, so the proposal was likely based on existing models in other states. Alabama is one of the last remaining US states without a lottery system.

It’s possible that sports betting is run through tribal casinos if and when it does arrive in the state. Alabama has zero commercial casinos but does have three tribal casinos operated by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.

In fact, the tribe has an agreement with Betfred through its Wind Creek Casino in Pennsylvania. If sports betting does go live at some point in Alabama, bettors can expect to see something like this:

-          UAB -9.5

-          Southern Miss +9.5

Here, UAB is a 9.5-point favorite over its rival, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. For a bettor to win their spread bet on UAB -9.5, they’ll need the Blazers to win the game by at least 10 points.

If UAB wins by fewer than 10, or loses outright, Southern Miss covers the 9.5-point spread.
