Betting on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football program has found a very comfortable home in the American Athletic Conference. The quality of play in this popular Mid-Major football conference is a perfect complement to the storied history of this program. Each season, Tulsa continues to gain fans and bettors alike in and outside of Oklahoma.

The state of Oklahoma has established a strong tradition of success throughout the history of college football. While the University of Oklahoma may be ranked at the top, the football program at Tulsa University certainly deserves a place on the list.

The football program at Tulsa dates back to 1917. However, it was not until 1933 when it became a full-time sport at the school. The Golden Hurricane became members of the Missouri Valley Conference in 1935 and remained in that conference until 1985.

Following 10 seasons as an Independent, Tulsa moved to the Western Athletic Association (WAC) for the next nine years. Following another nine seasons in Conference USA, the Golden Hurricane have settled in as members of the AAC.

Back in the 1940’s and 1950’s, Tulsa was nationally ranked in six different seasons. The highest national ranking was No. 4 in 1942 with Henry Frnka as head coach. In 1952, the Golden Hurricane went 8-2-1 to finish the season ranked No. 12 in the final Associated Press Top 25.

The next four decades for football at Tulsa were rather lean with limited appearances in postseason bowls. The turnaround started in 2003 with Steve Kragthorpe taking over as head coach. By 2008, the program was back in the national rankings. Tulsa went 10-3 in 2010 to finish the year as the No. 24 team in the nation.

With Philip Montgomery as the team’s head coach, Tulsa reached No. 18 in the 2020 national rankings. The Golden Hurricane went on to win the 2022 Myrtle Beach Bowl with a 30-17 victory against Old Dominion.

Playing in the AAC, games against Cincinnati, Houston and Central Florida draw the most betting attention. Going with Tulsa and the points as an underdog is a popular bet. If the Golden Hurricane are opened as seven-point road underdogs against UFC, they would have to beat the Knights straight-up or lose that game by six or fewer points to cover that spread and win.

Betting in Oklahoma

Oklahoma does not offer legal sports betting through commercial retail or online sportsbooks. An effort is underway to amend the state’s gaming compacts with in-state tribes operating land-based casinos. The existing network of tribal gaming venues would offer state-wide sports betting coverage if approved.

The strong tradition of college football in Oklahoma covers a number of popular programs such as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Backed by a strong following outside of the state, betting on the team in legal US markets is popular during the season.
