Betting on the Appalachian State Mountaineers
For a long time, the Appalachian State Mountaineers were nothing more than a solid Division 1-AA – or FCS – football program. Now, App State’s name carries plenty of weight among fans and bettors.
Appalachian State Mountaineers Overview
The Mountaineers’ inaugural season came all the way back in 1928, when the team went 3-6 as an Independent program in the NAIA. The school bounced around between conferences for decades before settling into the Southern Conference in 1972.
From 1982-2013, Appalachian State’s football program competed in the Division 1-AA, or the FCS. Early on, success came and went sporadically.
It wasn’t until the 2000s that the program established itself as an FCS power. Head Coach Jerry Moore led the team to six straight regular season conference titles, including three consecutive FCS championships from 2005-2007.
2007 proved to be special before the program ever completed its three-peat. In September, the Mountaineers took on Big Ten powerhouse, and the 5th-ranked team in the nation, Michigan. In one of college football’s most famous and shocking upsets, Appalachian State took out the Wolverines, 34-32.
The win itself was a shock, but a walk-off blocked field goal provided drama that would seem unbelievable even in Hollywood. Since its historic three-peat and upset victory, Appalachian State joined the FBS as a member of the Sun Belt conference, where it has maintained its winning culture.
Betting on Appalachian State in North Carolina
A couple tribal casinos in North Carolina partnered with Caesars Sportsbook to bring retail betting to the state, and there are plans for more retail casinos to open in the future.
Online betting, however, is not currently legal in the Tar Heel State. Senate Bill 688, a bill focused on bringing online betting to North Carolina, passed out of the House Commerce Committee before the 2021 legislative session ended.
For now, online sports betting has stalled in North Carolina. The fact that retail betting is operational and the fact that a bill is moving favorably in the state legislature is cause for optimism.
North Carolina residents looking to bet on Appalachian State can expect to see something like this if and when the state does move forward with online sports betting:
- Appalachian State Mountaineers -7.5
- Georgia Southern Eagles +7.5
Here, the Deeper Than Hate rivalry features Appalachian State as a 7.5-point favorite over Georgia Southern.
App State bettors need the Mountaineers to defeat Georgia Southern by at least 8 points. If App State wins by fewer than 8, Georgia Southern covers the spread.
