Betting on the Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M often finds itself in the shadows of traditional SEC powerhouses like Alabama, LSU, and Florida, but Head Coach Jimbo Fisher has begun to bring the Aggies out of the shadows in his short tenure.
Texas A&M Aggies Overview
Texas eats, sleeps, and breathes football, so it makes sense that A&M has had a program since 1906. It makes just as much sense that A&M racked up undefeated seasons in its early years, including 1919 and 1939 when it claimed its only two national championships.
Bear Bryant, legendary Alabama head coach, actually ran the A&M football program four seasons in the ‘50s before he left for the Alabama job. Bryant helped the Aggies finish inside the top-25 each season of his tenure.
Throughout the last several decades, the Aggies have frequently found themselves ranked inside the top-25. Some of the best A&M teams were not the most exciting and vice versa. In fact, the most electrifying Aggies teams probably came in 2012 and 2013.
Quarterback Johnny Manziel and his favorite target, wide receiver Mike Evans, lit the college football world on fire for two seasons. The Manziel-Evans connection resulted in about 150 receptions, 2,500 yards and 17 touchdowns over two years.
Manziel even became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012. Now, the Aggies are looking to continue the program’s run of great success with Jimbo Fisher leading the way.
Betting on the Aggies in Texas
Currently, sports betting is illegal in the Lone Star State.
Texas has notably lagged behind many other US states with regards to progressing toward legal sports betting. It now finds itself among a small group of states that does not offer retail or online betting.
Interestingly enough, however, Texas also finds itself among a small group of states that would immediately shoot to the top of the revenue and handle lists.
In addition to its massive population, Texas has plenty of nationally recognized sports teams and some of the most passionate fanbases in the country. That criteria makes Texas a potential goldmine for legal sports betting operators.
It’s possible that the Texas state legislature moves to legalize sports betting in some form in 2023, but statewide betting likely won’t be up and running until 2024 at the earliest.
If and when Texas does legalize sports betting, bettors can expect to see something like this when placing a wager on the Aggies:
- Texas A&M +7.5
- Alabama -7.5
In this example, the Texas A&M Aggies are 7.5-point underdogs against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Bettors who believe the Aggies will cover the spread need them to win outright or lose by fewer than 8 points.
If A&M loses by 8 or more points, those bettors lose their wagers, and Alabama covers the spread.
