Betting on the East Carolina Pirates

The East Carolina Pirates are members of the American Athletic Conference or AAC. As one of the more prominent football teams in this popular Mid-Major conference, betting on the Pirates has also gained a captive audience where legal.

The football program at East Carolina University is considered to be relatively young at 1965. This is in light of the fact that the oldest teams in the nation go back to the late 1800’s.

The Pirates began play in the mid-1960’s as a member of the Southern Division. At that time, other conference members included West Virginia, William & Mary and Davidson. The original Southern Conference going back to the 1920’s was the basis for both the SEC and ACC.

East Carolina decided to play as an Independent from 1977 until 1996 before joining Conference USA. The run in this conference lasted until 2013 with the formation of the AAC.

Over the years, the Pirates have had their share of memorable seasons. The program was ranked as high as No. 9 in 1991 with Bill Lewis as head coach. The Pirates posted a record of 11-1 and went on to beat North Carolina State 37-34 in the Peach Bowl.

With Steve Logan as head coach, East Carolina reached No. 16 in the national polls in 1999. Skip Holtz took the team to the Liberty Bowl in 2008. At one point in that season, the Pirates reached No. 14 in the national rankings.

Playing in the AAC, a few of East Carolina’s biggest rivals include the Cincinnati Bearcats, Houston Cougars and Central Florida Knights. The Pirates’ status in this conference is sure to be raised when all three of those teams move to the Big 12.

As far as betting on East Carolina against one of those three teams, the Pirates would most likely be getting points as underdogs. If they were 10-point road underdogs against UFC, the Pirates would have to beat the Knights straight-up or lose the game by nine or fewer points to cover against the spread.

Betting In North Carolina

Legal sports betting in North Carolina is limited to retail sportsbooks in Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort and Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino. A third tribal casino in Kings Mountain that is under construction could be added to the list.

A group of North Carolina lawmakers continue to push for legal online sports betting through mobile sportsbook apps. While support is high, the process continues to drag on.

Betting on in-state college teams such as East Carolina would be legal as far as the provisions of the current bill under consideration. Right now, Pirates’ football fans can bet on their team’s games at either of the two North Carolina retail sportsbooks.
