Betting on the Miami Hurricanes
The ACC’s Miami Hurricanes have already established the school’s football program on a national level. With the rapid growth of legal sports betting in the US, the Hurricanes are now a popular draw with sports bettors all across the nation.
Miami Hurricanes Team Overview
The University of Miami started the school’s football program in 1936. The team played as an Independent until 1990 with an impressive level of success.
The Hurricanes went on to win the Orange Bowl in 1945 to finish that season 9-1-1. Following a loss in the 1950 Orange Bowl, Miami won the Gator Bowl the following season while being ranked nationally in each campaign.
Andy Gustafson was named head coach of the team in 1948, and his tenure at the helm lasted until 1963. His best season leading Miami football was in 1956 when the Hurricanes were ranked No. 6 in the final Associated Press Top 25.
The list of college football head coaches associated with the Miami program is impressive to say the least. Lou Saban, Howard Schnellenberger and Jimmy Johnson held that role in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The Hurricanes won the first of five national titles in 1983.
Johnson led the team to a national championship in 1987, and Dennis Erickson was the head coach during the 1989 and 1991 national title runs. Miami joined the Big East ahead of the 1991 season and went a perfect 12-0 that year.
The fifth championship run was in 2001 with Larry Coker as head coach. Soon after, the Hurricanes decided to join the ACC ahead of the 2004 college football season.
Miami has yet to win another national title since 2001. However, the team’s string of postseason appearances in recent years speaks to the program’s continued level of success.
Playing in the ACC, a heated in-state rivalry has formed against the Florida State Seminoles. You could also add Clemson to that list given the Tigers’ high level of success in recent years.
Miami remains a very popular betting team on a national level during football season. This is especially true when the Hurricanes are playing at home as favorites on the point spread.
If Miami was favored by seven points against Florida State at home, the Hurricanes would have to beat the Seminoles by eight points or more to cash a winning bet on the game.
Betting on the Miami Hurricanes in Florida
Betting on sports in Florida was legal through a Seminole Tribe mobile betting app. However, this brief window of operation came with a huge asterisk. An amended 2021 tribal gaming compact was approved by the Governor and the federal government. However, that approval was then challenged in a court of law.
The entire matter of legal sports betting in Florida remains tied up in the courts. For now, the only way to wager on a Miami Hurricanes football game is in a state offering legal sportsbooks.
