Betting on the Army Black Knights
Playing as an Independent college football program, the Army Black Knights enjoy a strong national following. The team’s appeal as a prestigious military academy aside, football is also a huge draw for fans and bettors alike.
Army Black Knights Overview
As one of the nation’s premier military academies, football has always been a big part of the Army Black Knights athletic program. Dating all the way back to 1891, this is also one of the oldest football programs in the country.
Army football has enjoyed a proud history playing as an Independent program for much of its tenure in the sport. The brief exception to this status was from 1998 to 2004 as a member of Conference USA.
Playing as an Independent has given the Black Knights a chance to form long-lasting rivalries against teams from all across the country. Playing an annual showdown against the Navy Midshipmen in early December tops the list. Army also has a long running history against Air Force as another military academy.
The Black Knights have scheduled regular season games against The Citadel and VMI due to those schools military ties.
Army was a national force in the early days of college football with national championships in 1914, 1944 and 1945. The team also has a trio of Heisman Trophy winners to its credit, including Pete Dawkins in 1958.
The list of a few notable head coaches over the years includes Red Blaik in the 1940’s and 1950’s. More recently, Jeff Monken has led his team to five postseason bowl games since taking over the head coaching position in 2014.
Betting on the Black Knights will draw some added attention with the continued expansion into legal mobile sports betting. Located in West Point, New York, the annual Army-Navy game will become an even bigger betting draw.

Legal mobile sports betting in New York went live in early January of 2022. Industry impact was immediate with the Empire State growing into the biggest legal sports betting market in the US overnight. Along with the existing retail sportsbooks in upstate casinos, there are nine mobile operators in New York.
None of New York’s massive monthly sports betting handle comes from wagers on in-state college teams. Current law prohibits sports bets on in-state college programs such as the Army Black Knights football team.
