Betting on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Coastal Carolina broke into the top-25 for the first time in school history in 2020. The program followed that up with another double-digit-win season in 2021, making it one of the most successful Group of Five teams in recent memory.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Overview

The Chanticleers are new to football, relatively speaking. Its first football season came in 2003 as a member of the Big South Conference. Shortly after the program’s inception, it established a winning culture.

Coastal Carolina appeared in the FCS playoffs in five of six seasons from 2010-2015. Its last FCS season came in 2016, when the team went 10-2 as an independent. In 2017, the Chanticleers made the jump to the Sun Belt Conference and FBS football as a whole.

It was tough sledding for the first few years, as the program failed to qualify for a bowl game in any of its first three seasons. In 2020, however, Coastal Carolina ran the table in the regular season, going 11-0, before falling in overtime to Liberty in the Cure Bowl. The Chanticleers garnered respect in the 2021 pre-season, beginning the year ranked 22 in the AP Poll. The team wasn’t able to run the table like it did in 2020, but it did again win 11 games, this time capping off the season with a victory in the Cure Bowl over Northern Illinois.

Betting on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in South Carolina

Sports betting is currently illegal in South Carolina

While 2019 and 2020 provided little-to-no traction on the legalization front, 2021 fared a bit better. In 2021, Democratic representatives Todd Rutherford and Lucas Atkinson filed a bill that would bring legal betting to the Gamecock State.

In fact, it would bring the first form of gaming to the state altogether. The bill is just a page long and is a bit short on details, but the representatives’ plan is to redirect any tax revenue to the state’s infrastructure.

There’s a long way to go with regards to agreeing upon and launching a legal sports betting operation in South Carolina, but this initial proposal suggests that wagering may be limited to professional sports only.

What’s even more ambiguous is whether sports betting would be retail, online, or some combination of both. For now, sports betting hopefuls in South Carolina should take solace in the fact that there is at least movement in this discussion.

If South Carolina does bring its residents some form of sports betting in the future, bettors can expect to see something like this:

-          Coastal Carolina PK

-          Appalachian State PK

In this instance, a game between Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State is listed as a pick ‘em

That means a bettor simply has to pick the winner of the game rather than pick against a point spread.
