Betting on the UTSA Roadrunners
The Roadrunners have one of the youngest football programs in the nation, but that isn’t keeping bettors away from the window.
UTSA Roadrunners Overview
UTSA’s inaugural season came just over a decade ago, in 2011. Interestingly enough, Larry Coker served as the team’s first head coach. College football fanatics may remember that Coker led Miami to a 12-0 season and national championship in 2001.
After a 5-year hiatus, Coker returned to coaching with the Roadrunners and amassed a 26-32 record before resigning in 2016.
Following Coker’s departure, the Roadrunners struggled to put together a winning season. In 2020, first-year head coach Jeff Traylor led the program to its fourth winning season and second bowl game appearance.
In 2021, Traylor and the Roadrunners built massively upon the previous year’s success. UTSA went 12-2 and defeated Western Kentucky to complete its quest for its first Conference USA title.
Traylor and UTSA will look to continue to surprise fans and bettors with their unprecedented success in the coming years.
Betting on the Roadrunners in Texas
Currently, there are no legal ways to bet on sports in Texas.
The Lone Star state finds itself in a fascinating position in 2022. With seemingly no rush to legalize sports betting, Texas is falling farther behind its fellow US states every month. Despite that bleak observation, it is also positioned to be one of the most lucrative markets if it does decide to legalize.
With such a massive population and marketable collection of sports teams, Texas would instantly join the likes of New York, New Jersey, and Nevada as a national leader.
Many supporters, including some legislators and some prominent Texas sports figures, believe the citizens of Texas would vote to legalize sports betting. So, why hasn’t it happened?
Proponents of legal betting have run into issues within the state legislature. For example, Dan Patrick, a Texas politician with a known anti-betting stance, won the GOP nomination in March 2022 to run for Lieutenant General.
Advocates for legal sports betting have an uphill climb when it comes to persuading their adversaries that legalization brings the state more benefit than harm.
It’s possible sports betting is legalized in Texas in some capacity in 2023, but actual launch seems unlikely before 2024.
If sports betting does launch in the Lone Star State, bettors can expect to see something like this:
- UTSA Roadrunners -6.5
- UTEP +6.5
Here, the UTSA Roadrunners are 6.5-point favorites over the UTEP Miners. Bettors taking UTSA to cover the spread need the Roadrunners to win by at least 7 points.
If UTSA wins by fewer than 7, UTEP covers the spread, and UTSA bettors lose their wagers.
