Betting on the Pittsburgh Panthers

The Pittsburgh Panthers have come to define football in this Pennsylvania steel mining town. Backed by a strong and loyal base of fans and sports bettors alike, this ACC football power is the highlight of Pittsburgh Saturdays during the fall.

Pittsburgh Panthers Team Overview

Commonly known as the Pitt Panthers, football has been a long-standing tradition that goes back to the team’s first season in 1905. Pitt’s first affiliation with a college football conference was not until 1991 when the Panthers became members of the Big East.

Playing as an Independent, Pitt has won five national college championships. The first three were before 1920 and the fourth title was won in 1937. The last national title was in 1976 with Johnny Majors as head coach. The Panthers went a perfect 12-0 that season.

The other big accomplishment that season was Pitt running back Tony Dorsett winning the 1976 Heisman Trophy as the most outstanding player in college football.

The Panthers were members of the Big East through the 2012 season. With Dave Wannstedt as head coach, Pitt’s highest national ranking in that conference was No. 15 in 2009.

Accepting an invitation to become a member of the ACC, Pitt joined that conference ahead of the 2013 regular season. In 2015, Pat Narduzzi was named the Panthers’ new head coach. In his first seven seasons at the helm, his teams have qualified for postseason bowls five times.

Pitt finished the 2021 season with a record of 11-3 to earn an invitation to the Peach Bowl. The Panthers lost that game 31-21 to Michigan State but still managed to finish the year ranked No. 13 in the final Associated Press Top 25.

Pitt’s all-time rival over the years remains the West Virginia Mountaineers. Old Big East rivalries against the Miami Hurricanes and the Syracuse Orange have carried over to the ACC.

Betting on the Panthers has become a big part of the college football season in Pennsylvania. A popular bet is the OVER on the posted total line for the combined score. If the total was set at 45 points in a game between Pitt and Miami, these two teams would have to score a combined 46 points or more to win that OVER bet.
