Tampa Bay Lightning Franchise History

The Lightning joined the NHL in the 1992-1993 season and struggled to find consistent success in their first decade.

In 2004, under Coach John Tortorella, Tampa Bay claimed its first ever Stanley Cup after coming back from down 3-2 against the Calgary Flames.

In the years following their exciting, dramatic Stanley Cup victory, the Lightning again found themselves on uneven footing and failed to establish themselves as a consistent threat in the Eastern Conference.

The mid and late-2010s treated the Lightning well, as they became a mainstay in the NHL playoffs under Jon Cooper.

Then, it all came together again in 2020 when stars Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov took Tampa Bay back to the top of the NHL. The following season, the same duo, and Brayden Point, led the Lightning to their second consecutive title.

Betting on the Tampa Bay Lightning in Florida

Legal sports betting in Florida is not currently available and it may not be until 2024 or 2025. The Sunshine State’s stance on sports betting is a complex one.

In 2021, the Seminole Tribe launched its Hard Rock sportsbook app, but the app was live for just a month. You’re probably wondering how it was live if sports betting isn’t legal in Florida.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a compact with the Seminole Tribe that would allow online, statewide sports betting.

From there, state legislators approved the deal, and the Department of the Interior allowed the compact to proceed, but they did not explicitly approve it.

That moved all legal responsibility to the court system. In November 2021, a federal court ruled that the compact between Florida and the Seminole Tribe was vacated.

Since then, FanDuel and DraftKings made a collective push to acquire enough signatures to put sports betting on the 2022 ballot in Florida.

After months of intense lobbying, the two sportsbook giants failed to collect the necessary signatures and admitted defeat.

Despite the topsy-turvy path thus far, supporters are confident in sports betting making its way onto the ballot in 2024. Unfortunately, that means it likely wouldn’t launch until 2025.
