Betting on the Minnesota Twins

Playoff success has eluded the Minnesota Twins in recent years, but the team has been stronger since the turn of the 21^st century than ever before in its history.

Minnesota Twins Franchise History

The Twins have played their home games in Minnesota since 1961. Prior to that, the franchise competed as the Washington Senators when the American League formed in 1901.

The Senators went over two decades before claiming their first World Series title. In fact, the Senators returned to the World Series the following year but fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates in seven games.

Before moving to Minnesota in 1961, the Senators appeared in one more World Series, losing in five games to the New York Giants.

Shortly after the move, the Twins made three ALCS trips in a six year span, but the team ultimately came up short with regards to winning a championship.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that Minnesota summited the mountain of Major League Baseball. Frank Viola and Kirby Puckett led the club to victory in ’87, and Puckett played an integral part in the team’s next title in ’91.

The Twins were allergic to the playoffs for the remainder of the ‘90s following its second World Series victory. The turn of the century cleared Minnesota right up, though, as they made 6 appearances in 10 seasons.

Sports betting is currently illegal in Minnesota. Since 2020, there has been interest among lawmakers to pass some form of legislation that legalizes sports betting, but all efforts have failed.

There is general optimism regarding a 2022 bill, but it’s likely that sports betting would launch in only retail locations to begin with. The main stakeholders in the Land of 10,000 Lakes are the 11 Indian tribes that operate 19 casinos.

Up to this point, the tribes have not been convinced that widespread sports betting, particularly online, would benefit their operations. As tribal support increases, so does the likelihood of legalized sports betting, especially in retail form.

When Minnesota does legalize sports betting, in whichever capacity it chooses, bettors can expect to see something resembling the following:

-          Minnesota Twins -1.5 (-150)

-          Milwaukee Brewers +1.5 (+120)

In this hypothetical Border Battle, the Twins are favored by 1.5 runs over the Brewers, and the Twins’ runline is juiced to -150, essentially meaning a Twins bettor is paying a premium for that runline.

If the Twins win by more than 1.5 runs, they cover the runline and cash all Twins -1.5 wagers. If the Twins win by just 1, or lose, the Brewers cover the runline.
