Betting on the Charlotte Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets continue to battle for playoff position as one of the better teams in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. They also happen to be one of the more profitable teams this season for NBA bettors.

Charlotte Hornets Team Overview

Charlotte was part of the wave of expansion teams to join the NBA in the late 1980’s. Through much of the 1990’s as the Hornets, this was a hit or miss team as far as making the playoffs.

Following a name change to the Bobcats in 2004, the gaps between postseason appearances began to widen. Over the course of 10 seasons as the Bobcats, Charlotte only qualified for the playoffs three times.

Getting back to their roots, the team went back to being called the Hornets in 2014. A year later, Charlotte added a dynamic player in Kemba Walker. All the ingredients for a return to the postseason appeared to be in place. Unfortunately, the team’s extended playoff drought continued.

Walker moved on to Boston and then the New York Knicks after spending his first eight NBA seasons in Charlotte.

Over the course of franchise history, the deepest postseason run went as far as the Eastern Conference semifinals round. Since 2002, the team has not made it past the opening round.

Betting on the Charlotte Hornets in North Carolina

Sports betting in North Carolina is legal on a very limited basis. Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort and Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino also offer legal retail sportsbooks. At this time, these are the only two tribal casinos with sports betting.

When you are placing a legal sports bet on the Hornets, you'll often find bets on what is called the spread. For example, in a game against the Hawks, if the spread is set at plus or minus 2.5 and Charlotte is favored to win, they'll be the -2.5. They have to win by at least 3 points to "cover" the spread and result in a winning bet for the bettor.

Online sports betting is still illegal in the state. While you can bet on the Hornets’ games at either of these two casinos, they remain the only legal options in North Carolina.
