Betting on the Wisconsin Badgers

After legendary Badgers coach Bo Ryan retired during the 2015-16 season, Greg Gard was tasked with sustaining success at what had become one of the nation’s most consistent basketball programs.

While living up to Ryan was a nearly impossible task, Gard has kept the Badgers near the top of the Big Ten, making Wisconsin an intriguing bet.

Wisconsin Badgers Men’s Basketball History

Back in 1941, before the creation of the AP top-25 poll, Wisconsin won its first – and only – national championship.

Unfortunately for Badgers fans, the next 50 years were not nearly as exciting. From 1948-1993, Wisconsin never qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Success finally found the Badgers in the 1990s in the form of a few NCAA tournament berths. In 2000, with Dick Bennett at the helm, Wisconsin made the Final Four as an 8-seed.

Unexpectedly, Bennett resigned three games into the following season, citing burnout.

Bo Ryan entered the fold the year after Bennett resigned, and immediately established Wisconsin as an NCAA Tournament mainstay.

In 14 full seasons as the Badgers’ leader, Ryan never missed the Big Dance. He led Wisconsin to back-to-back Final Fours in 2014 and 2015, but he ultimately fell short on his quest for a national title.

In the 2015 Final Four, Badgers legends Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker led the team to a victory over undefeated Kentucky. Unfortunately, their magical season was cut short by Duke in the national championship game.

Betting on the Badgers in Wisconsin

Sports betting is legal in Wisconsin as of late 2021; however, it is only offered in one retail location at the moment.

The Oneida Casino is the only place where Wisconsin bettors can go to place a wager. Online sports betting is still illegal in Wisconsin, but it’s possible that progress is made on that front soon.

Despite that harsh reality, the Oneida Casino does have a website that is accessible to on-site customers.

The St. Croix tribe was also awarded the ability to offer sports betting on its property, but that operation is not yet up and running.

If Wisconsinites travel to the Oneida Casino, or wait until online betting is legal, they can expect to see something like this:

·        Wisconsin -4.5

·        Iowa +4.5

In this example, Wisconsin is a 4.5-point favorite over Iowa. A bettor laying the points with Wisconsin on the spread needs the Badgers to win by at least 5 points.

If Wisconsin wins the game by fewer than 5 points, or if it loses, Iowa would cover the spread and anyone betting on Wisconsin would lose their bet.
