Betting on the Kansas Jayhawks

The Kansas Jayhawks have served as Big 12 royalty since the mid-80s. As a result, they’re one of the hottest tickets at the betting window each season.

Kansas Jayhawks Men’s Basketball History

Over the course of almost 50 years, beginning in 1907 and ending in 1956, Phog Allen coached the Jayhawks in two separate tenures.

He amassed 590 wins for the Jayhawks and had such an impact on the program – including one national title – that the school opened an arena in 1955 and named it Allen Fieldhouse.

His last full season as the head coach was the first full season the team played in the arena named after him.

The season after Allen retired, Kansas lost in the national title game despite having the late-great Wilt Chamberlain leading the charge.

After Allen’s tenure, the Jayhawks’ experienced some turbulence until the 1980s.

Hall of Famer Larry Brown coached Kansas to its second ever national championship victory in 1988, on the back of Danny Manning, despite the team entering the NCAA Tournament as a 6-seed.

After that season, Brown left for the NBA, and Roy Williams took over. While Williams couldn’t capture the elusive NCAA title, he cemented the Jayhawks’ status as a blue-blood.

Kansas made the NCAA Tournament in each of Williams’ 15 seasons except his first, and it entered as a 4-seed or better in 12 of his 15 years, thanks in part to players like Paul Pierce.

Bill Self took control of the program in 2003 and picked up where Williams left off. He added a national championship to his belt in 2008 with a team of Brandon Rush, Mario Chalmers, and a plethora of other NBA talent.

Since then, Self and the Jayhawks have remained a force in the college game. There are plenty of current NBA players representing Kansas as well, including Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid.

Governor Laura Kelly signed sports betting into law in May of 2022, and the state launched on Sept. 8, 2022.

With Jayhawks’ fans lucky enough to be able to place wagers on their home-state powerhouse, here’s what they might see on the board:

·        Kansas -2.5

·        Baylor +2.5

Here, Kansas is favored by 2.5 points over the reigning national champs. If Kansas wins by 3 or more points, they cover the spread and a bet on the Jayhawks cashes.

If Kansas wins by fewer than 3, or if they lose to Baylor, a spread bet on Kansas settles as a loss.
