UCLA Men’s Basketball History

With 19 Final Fours and 11 national championships, UCLA is arguably the most successful men’s basketball program in history.

Their dominance began in the 1960s and spanned into the ‘70s when John Wooden coached the Bruins’ superstars to 10 titles in 12 years.

From 1967-1973, UCLA won 7 straight championships and lost just 5 games total. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Walton are the most notable legends that Wooden had during this unprecedented run of dominance.

Wooden’s success was so impactful on college basketball that the best player in the country each year receives an award named after the late, great UCLA coach.

His tenure ended in 1975 with his final national championship, and the Bruins wouldn’t summit the college basketball mountain again until 1995.

In ’95, Jim Harrick led the 1-seed Bruins to their most recent national championship. Despite not winning more titles, the Bruins kept their success rolling into the 2000s.

The mid-2000s consisted of three straight Final Fours, including a loss in the title game in 2006. Aaron Afflalo was a key cog on the first two Final Four teams, but the last Final Four team in 2008 was perhaps the most talented.

Future NBA stars Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, and Darren Collison led the team, but the Bruins ultimately fell short again.

In 2021, UCLA entered the NCAA Tournament as an 11-seed and was forced to play in the First Four. Amazingly, the Bruins went from First Four to Final Four before falling to Gonzaga.

Betting on UCLA in California

Unfortunately, sports betting is still illegal in California.

While legalization is possible toward the end of 2022, it’s more likely that the highly-anticipated debut arrives in 2023.

Details of a potential legalization and launch are still very much up in the air. Sports betting could arrive in the Golden State in the form of racetracks, tribal casinos, online wagering, or something different.

Since New York launched online sports betting in January 2022, California has become the unquestioned crown jewel of the untapped sports betting market.

In a state with so many college and professional sports teams, Californians may be wondering what to expect upon legalization.

At this point, it’s unclear how the state would roll out sports betting, but this is something bettors can expect if and when they are eventually able to wager on sports:

·        UCLA -6.5

·        USC +6.5

In this crosstown rivalry, UCLA is favored by 6.5 points. That means UCLA bettors need the Bruins to win by at least 7 points.

If the Bruins win by fewer than 7, or lose outright, UCLA bettors lose their bet and USC covers the spread.
